The Alexandrite Gem

The Alexandrite stone is referred by Gem Connoisseur as “Emerald by Day, Ruby by Night.” The Alexandrite Gem is the very rare color-change variety of the mineral Chrysoberyl and changes colors in different light. This stone is exceptionally rare and valuable and has chameleon-like qualities due to the complex way this mineral absorbs light. Alexandrite breathtaking color change is so striking that the phenomenon itself is often called the “Alexandrite Effect”. Typically, its’ three pleochroic colors are green, orange and purple red. Alexandrite is a relatively expensive member of the Chrysoberyl Family. Alexandrite originated on Russia’s Ural Mountain in the 1830s. Alexandrite gems are founded in Sri Lanka, East Africa and Brazil. It was named after the young Alexander II (1818-1881).
