In 1967, the first Tanzanite was faceted and introduces to the world. The New York Jeweler, Tiffany and Company launched a public education program to make consumer aware of this amazing gemstone. Tiffany and Company provided the traded name for the gemstone; Tanzanite. The mineralogical name for Tanzanite is Blue Zoisite, which is derived from the mineral Calcium Aluminum Silicate.  Tiffany change the name to Tanzanite because they thought it would be easier to market to customers. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful stones to be discovered in the last 2000 years, per Tiffany and Company. The name also reflects the gem’s limited geographical origin which is found and mined at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in the Manyara Region of North Tanzania. Tiffany has made a big impact on this gem. The popularity was cultivated by promotions put in place by Tiffany and Company as well as the beauty of this Blue Stone. The name Tanzanite is used for a color variety of Zoisite.

 Although naturally brown, this transparent Zoisite arrays from Blue Purple to Blush Violet with heat treatment. The Blue Color is caused by the small amounts of the mineral Vanadium, which in within the Zoisite mineral foundation. When heating this gemstone, the color Blue actually improves. Tanzanite is a Pleochroic Gem which also complicates the cutting process and is a physical property in which materials appeal to be different color when viewed from different color when viewed in crystallographic direction. Tanzanite is considered a trichroic material and it takes skill to cut tanzanite and requires experience in skill, knowledge and price estimate. The stone is cut into a preliminary shape as known as a preform. The durability of Tanzanite requires special care. It has a Mohs hardness scale of 6.5. This gem is not suitable for everyday wearing. Hardness is the resistance of a gem being scratched and toughness is the resistance of a gem breakage.
